Dr. Clara Kim //

Child and Adolescent Psychologist

Welcome!

Dr. Clara Kim is a child and adolescent psychiatrist in Northborough, Massachusetts. She treats clients of all ages, providing both pharmacologic treatment and psychological counseling. Her specialties include Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, Psychotic Disorders, and a wide variety of other mental health conditions.

She welcomes people of all backgrounds, gender identities, sexual orientations, and lifestyles.

Qualifications

Dr. Clara Kim completed training in the Adult Psychiatry Residency program at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. She also completed her Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at UMass. She is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both general Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She is a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists (AACAP).

She has also pursued additional training with a semester at the Psychoanalytic Institute of New England and the one-year fellowship at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.

Psychotherapy

Talk therapy covers many different modalities and serves many purposes. It is important that the client find the right modality for them. Some prefer an insight-oriented model in which the search for understanding oneself leads to a improvement in one's life. Others gain from a cognitive behavioral model in which one challenges maladaptic thought patterns to feel better.

Dr. Clara Kim provides both insight oriented therapy as well as cognitive behavioral therapy.

Pharmacology

Medications can be very helpful in treating mental illness. Many symptoms respond well to pharmacologic interventions. However, it is important to choose the right one and the fewest necessary.

As medication lists grow, so do the likelihood of side effects or drug-drug interactions. The purpose of medications is not to eliminate all negative experiences, but to assist where symptoms have become unmanageable.

Combination

As a psychiatrist, Dr. Clara Kim is able to prescribe medications as well as provide psychotherapy. Being able to provide both services allows her to find the most suitable treatment for a given situation. Medications can be followed more closely in combination treatment. It also allows Dr. Kim to get to know the client better than if she were "only the med doc." In addition, a smaller list of clients means that she can dedicate more time to each client.
